After Sigrid Kaag's departure as outgoing finance minister, State Secretary Steven van Weyenberg is in line to succeed her, the AD reports. Van Weyenberg, a former MP and "financial specialist" of theD66 party, is now being put forward as the new man on finance.
Currently, Van Weyenberg is already replacing State Secretary for Culture and Media Hunay Uslu, who previously left the sinking D66 ship.According to D66 leader Rob Jetten, Van Weyenberg is "one of our most experienced MPs." Van Weyenberg's predecessor, Sigrid Kaag, left for the Middle East earlier this week. She started as UN envoy and will work on the relief and reconstruction of Gaza.
The choice of Van Weyenberg can be called remarkable. He is one of those D66 MPs who did not exactly shine in campaigns or even in the Chamber. It seems that this is mainly a safe choice to continue without too much ado as long as the negotiations for a new cabinet are still going on. Because let's face it, D66 doesn't have many better options at the moment, at least we can't think of anyone else.

In any case, Van Weyenberg seems assured of a nice penny, should a new cabinet be formed sooner than expected. The waiting money is then secured again, even though Van Weyenberg hinted in August that he actually wanted to retire from politics.Nevertheless, he took the job as secretary of state and now therefore as minister.So for the time being, the farewell seems to be postponed for a while.
